Tropical Forests: Global Implications and Pressing Actions

Tropical Forests Call (Forests)

Projects Data Resources Connect

The Belmont Forum is pleased to announce the launch of a Collaborative Research Action “Tropical Forests: Global Implications and Pressing Actions” (FORESTS 2024) in partnership with the G20.

The CRA FORESTS 2024 aims to coordinate actions and projects with a transdisciplinary approach to develop innovative solutions to the challenges faced in tropical forest regions, Amazonia being the largest and most populated. Acknowledging the differences in governance, cultural diversity, and territorial configuration, this CRA spans tropical forests worldwide that face similar challenges.

This call for proposals recognises the growing threats to those ecosystems and their inhabitants, such as climate change, deforestation, unregulated agroindustry and land conversion, illegal activities, pollution, and environmental/climate injustices. In the global tropical forest regions such as the Amazon, Central America, Asia, and Africa, the well-being and survival of indigenous peoples and local communities depend on the local ecosystem under pressure. The challenges tropical forest regions face vary depending on governance, local ecology, cultural diversity, and territorial configuration.

Call areas:

Proposals submitted to this CRA should encompass elements from at least two of the three areas listed below.

  • AREA 1: Reduce deforestation, and promote sustainable development and locally-led economies
  • AREA 2: Ecosystem Function, Connectivity, and Climate Change Science
  • AREA 3: Environmental Justice and Governance

Details of the call and the application process are provided via the application portal bfgo.org. There are also training modules available for proposers on the Belmont Forum YouTube channel. Before starting to prepare proposals, applicants are advised to contact their funding organisation(s) as listed in the annex documents for the call.

Africa Regional Call

Africa Regional Call (ARC)

Projects Data Resources Connect

The Belmont Forum is pleased to announce the launch of the Africa Regional Collaborative Research Action.

In support of the African Union’s climate, environment, and sustainability goals and priority areas for Agenda 2063, the National Research Foundation, South Africa (NRF) has led the development of this Belmont Forum Collaborative Research Action (CRA) to address knowledge gaps and priorities in addressing climate change vulnerability across the continent. Three themes (or areas) of concern emerged from scoping sessions with the community:

  • Area 1 – Water – Energy – Food – Health Nexus
  • Area 2 – Pollution
  • Area 3 – Disaster Preparedness, Responsiveness, and Recovery

In addition to the three call Areas, green and blue economy was identified as a cross-cutting issue and education and awareness were identified as cross-cutting activities to be encouraged.

Proposals should include a strong and deliberate linkage between the societal and
environmental aspects within global environmental challenges to ensure that they
meet the Belmont Challenge for international transdisciplinary research: to provide
knowledge for understanding, mitigating, and/or adapting to global environmental
Change.

Given the complexity and scope of these challenges, research consortia must be truly
transdisciplinary, thus including researchers from: a) social sciences/humanities/economics and b) natural sciences/physical sciences/engineering/technology, as well as c) societal partners (i.e. citizens, industry, civil society organizations), using a participatory, co-designed and co-implementation approach. Additional knowledge holders are welcome to be part of the proposing consortium once this minimum criterion is met.

Successful proposals must address and deliver on at least one of the three themes identified above, with cross-cutting linkages across multiple Areas and the integration of blue and green economies, education, and awareness encouraged.

Details of the call and the application process are provided via the application portal bfgo.org. There are also training modules available for proposers on the Belmont Forum YouTube channel. Before starting to prepare proposals, applicants are advised to contact their funding organisation(s) as listed in the annex documents for the call.

Driving Urban Transitions (DUT)

Projects Data Resources Connect

Our future depends on tackling major complex challenges now, many of which must be tackled in cities and by urban communities. In order to do so, the Belmont Forum joins the European partnership Driving Urban Transitions for the year 2024 in a common call.

Part of the European Horizon Europe Framework Programme and a continuation of the Urban Europe JPI, the Driving Urban Transitions European Partnership brings together a strong community of almost 30 countries and more than 60 partners to support the European innovation ecosystem in the urban field for the third year running.

The Belmont Forum joins forces in bringing new funders and allowing the international community to participate in the programme, offering a global funding opportunity for innovative projects that accelerate the transition to sustainable cities. By providing a joint CRA, the Belmont Forum builds on its previous actions, the SUGI Food-Water-Energy Nexus CRA and ERANET which was implemented jointly with JPI Urban Europe.

The Belmont Forum is supporting this initiative with participation from FAPESP (Brazil), JST (Japan), and NSTC (Taipei).

This call focuses on:

  • Circular Urban Economies
  • 15-minute Cities
  • Positive Energy Districts

The DUT call for projects, the first phase of which opens on 2 September 2024 and closes on 14 November 2024, is designed to fund transnational research and innovation projects addressing urban challenges on an international scale to help cities in their transition to a more sustainable economy and way of operating.

Background

Joint Programming Initiatives (JPIs) were established to pool national research efforts and foster the implementation of the European Research Area (ERA) to address grand societal challenges. JPIs are flexible intergovernmental partnerships with the aim of better aligning the research and innovation investments spent at the national level. They involve countries that voluntarily agree to work in partnership towards common visions encapsulated in Strategic Research and Innovation Agendas and implemented through joint activities.

The Belmont Forum is a group of funding agencies from around the world that support transdisciplinary, globally-representative research groups and coproduction/participatory methods to address various global environmental change topics. Topics are addressed through CRAs and the Cultural Heritage and Climate CRA is among three research calls that will be launched in 2023.

The call results from a White Paper jointly developed and published in March 2022 by the two JPIs and from joint workshops held with the Belmont Forum in June and September 2022 aimed at identifying and incorporating research priorities from Africa, the Americas and Asia.

Projects Data Resources Connect

The Belmont Forum is pleased to announce the launch of a collaborative research networking call on the theme: Integrated Approaches to Human Migration/Mobility in an Era of Rapid Global Change.

We solicit proposals that contribute to an integrated systems approach to accurately characterize migration and mobility and its intersection with Global Change, both closely related and intersecting phenomena. Successful proposals will focus on illuminating the determinants of migration – why people move, do not move, from and to where and when, and on what time scale, in relation to Global Change processes like environmental and climate change, demographic changes, consumption patterns, energy use and land-use. Exploration of dependencies, linkages, and / or impacts between Global Change, migration and mobility, human constructs, social science and humanities approaches, and other studies are encouraged. Within this theme, there are three areas to consider including (1) data and methodology, (2) policy, and (3) human-centric approaches that integrate human perspectives and needs in all steps and aspects of a project and beyond.

Call themes:

  • Area 1 – synthesizing, integrating, and supplementing data and models
  • Area 2 – integrative governance and legal and policy frameworks
  • Area 3 – human-centric approaches to studying and integrating data and frameworks on vulnerable communities

Details of the call and the application process are provided via the application portal https://bfgo.org. There are also training modules available for proposers on the Belmont Forum YouTube channel. Before starting to prepare proposals, applicants are advised to contact their funding organisation(s) as listed in the annex documents for the call.
